Winter Whallop! A Hands-On Percussion Experience for Kids
Kids keep the beat at Winter Whallop!
Kids love percussion – it’s noise, activity, and creativity, all rolled into one. At “Winter Whallop! A Hands-On Percussion Experience,” youngsters will have the opportunity to clap, sing, and play instruments together. The program will be held at the Newark Arts Alliance on Sunday, January 22, from 2:30-4:30 p.m.
Before they start playing percussion games with leader Terri Gillespie, the youngsters will create their own egg-shaped shaker instrument to use during the session and take home with them.
They’ll also learn a little about the history of “banging on things” as a way of making music and experience a handful of unusual instruments “from the kitchen and the toolshed,” including spoons, the washboard, and the musical saw.
This session is designed for ages 6 and up; younger children are welcome to attend with a parent. The fee is $5 for the first child and $8 for each additional child; no charge for adults. Proceeds from this event support scholarships for the NAA’s Camp Imagine summer arts program, so that more local children can experience the arts.
Got a thirst to make music?
Quench it at the NAA! Local music lovers have come up with two events that give people a chance to get together and play, just for the fun of it.
First Sunday Music Jams
The "Every Sunday Music Jam," which has been offered for more than a year under the guidance of our very own Jeff Smith, is making a change. We’re now holding the jam on the first Sunday of each month from 12:30-4:30 p.m. – although it's best to come early because if there are no guests by 3 p.m. or so, Jeff packs up his guitar and heads home.
It's an "open house" situation where musicians of all types bring an instrument, perform a bit for each other, and jam as talents and interests allow. Listeners welcome, too!
Drum Circle

Our free, informal drum circle meets the fourth Friday of the month (except November and December) from 7-8:30 p.m. Participants are asked to bring a drum or other percussion instrument, and melody instruments (such as flute, clarinet, etc.) are also welcome.
Moderator Rebecca Sullivan says the focus is primarily on African and Mideast rhythms, but all drumming is welcome. There can also be dancing, if space permits. Children should be accompanied by parents.
No advance registration is needed. Donations will be solicited but not required. Info: Rebecca Sullivan, 302-562-4515 or Lorelei.dancer@gmail.com.
