NAA joins
Captain Blue Hen Comics
in Free Comic Book Day

Free Comic Book Day is the biggest event of the year at Captain Blue Hen Comics (www.captainbluehen.com). Last year, over 1,500 people came to the shop in Newark’s Market East Plaza to celebrate this funny to phantasmagoric art form.
This year, Free Comic Book Day is on Saturday, May 3, from 12-5 p.m. Captain Blue Hen invited the NAA, its new neighbor, to join in. From 12-4 p.m., comic book artists will visit the NAA site to conduct how-to workshops and give talks about their experiences. There will also be a “decorate your own mask” project for kids.
The artists include:
- Scott Neely, who has worked on licensed properties like Scooby-Doo, Grim Adventures of Billy And Mandy, Powerpuff Girls Pokemon, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Winnie the Pooh, Bratz and more.
- Mike Manley, editor of DRAW! Magazine and an instructor at Delaware College of Art and Design. He has worked for all of the major comic book publishers from Marvel and DC to Dark Horse.
- Neil Vokes (pictured), who has worked on characters like Superman, Spider-Man, and Tarzan. His recent work includes Black Forest and Wicked West 1 & 2.
- Jamar Nicholas, the creator of Radiskull & Devil Doll, and The Jamar Chronicles.
- John Gallagher & Rich Faber, creators of Roboy Red, who have also worked on John's Buzzboy comics together.
- Buz Hasson & Ken Haeser, creators of The Living Corpse comic from Zenescope. Delaware's own, Buz designed the Captain Blue Hen window sign and has been a monster maker for movies. Ken, a New Jersey native, graduated from the Joe Kubert School and was a colorist for Marvel. Both worked on Eyes of Asia and are tattoo artists.

Caffé Gelato wine dinner benefits the NAA
The NAA will be part of two special events designed to celebrate the opening of an additional dining area at Caffé Gelato on Main Street in Newark. A special exhibit of NAA members’ work will hang on the walls all month, and a special wine dinner will benefit the NAA.
The dinner is set for Sunday, April 6, at 5 p.m., with $20 of the $49-per-person cost being contributed to support NAA projects and programs. For details on the menu and more information, download the invitation.
Special events: You can make them happen!
The NAA has formed a Special Events Committee, chaired by Board member Michele McCann, to plan and carry out a variety of activities. New members are welcome!
The committee is currently focusing on the grand opening of the NAA in our new space, set for Friday, April 11, from 6-9 p.m. It will also be involved in ongoing events such as wine tastings, opening receptions for art exhibits, volunteer appreciation parties, activities relating to the annual Mosaic Gala fund raiser, and annual members’ meetings. New items may include:
• special art openings,
• concerts and coffeehouse-style evenings, and
• performances such as a comedy night, poetry events, etc.
We're looking for interested volunteers who are outgoing, like to plan social events, are well organized, and can follow through on tasks in a timely way. Use your creativity in a new way, meet fun people, and participate in exciting events that benefit the community!
Call the NAA at 302-266-7266 for the next meeting date, or e-mail info@newarkartsalliance.org. It is not mandatory to attend all meetings.
