DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nMark your calendars! Accepting applications August 1st\, 2025 – October 1st\, 2025. Please do not send any before then. \nDo you have a body of work that would fill a space and has a consistent theme? If your exhibit is scheduled\, an additional fee of $85 is required by Dec.1\, 2025.  \nDeadline to submit proposals is October 1\, 2025\, Artists will be notified via email by November 1\, 2025. SUMMARY:Exhibit Visual Messages: Socially Engaged Art
DESCRIPTION:The latest gallery installment at the Newark Arts Alliance ‘Visual Messages: Socially Engaged Art’\, asks us to consider: how do we engage artistically with the world and our community? \nThis thought-provoking exhibit features 45 pieces from 25 different local artists depicting a wide variety of topics including the environment\, homelessness\, politics\, world peace\, and health. Media types range from traditional painting styles and materials to book constructions\, paper assemblages\, collage\, stained glass\, fabric\, and beading with messages. \nThe guest Juror for this exhibition was Vanesa Simon. Vanesa is an entrepreneur\, artist\, and dedicated community organizer. Her personal experience with a cancer diagnosis led her to explore the intersection of the arts and health. In 2017\, she piloted the program “Healing Through the Arts” and later innovated a fiscal partnership with the Delaware Art Museum through her company\, Mariposa Arts. \nAs an artist\, Vanesa’s work has reached an international audience. She has participated in exhibitions across Argentina\, Barcelona\, and New York City as part of an artist collective from Argentina whose focus is Artist’s Books. Her art has also been showcased in local exhibitions in her home state of Delaware. In 2024 she was selected as a Global South Arts & Health Envoy and has had the great honor of being nominated by President Joe Biden to the National Council on the Arts.

Jean Lanyon\, Michael Luck\, René Paul Marks\, Robert Palandrani\, Christina Peters \, Karen Schueler\, River Shields\, Joy S. Smith\, Michele Tilford\, Atala Dorothy Toy\, Sabina Troncone \, Denise Van Deroef\, Deborah Whiteside and Sally Wilson. \nAbout the juror\, Abigail McBride \n“The longer I paint\, the more amazed I am at how beautiful the world is.”\n\n\n\n\n Compelled to chronicle the life and world around her\, Abigail Faye McBride paints with the heart of a poet. Her oil paintings and charcoal drawings bear witness to a time\, person or passing glimmer of light. Abigail paints landscape\, figure and still life working interchangeably with brush and palette knife. Collectors\, nationally and internationally\, appreciate the color\, mood and elegance of her work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA consummate Cape School colorist\, the draftsmanship in her work is born of an academic interest in the portrait and figure. Her work blends traditional subject matter with modern design sensibilities. She is part of a new breed of perceptual painters working from direct observation be it plein air or in the studio. Though often free of narrative\, her work is grounded in the present day as a contemporary interpretation of genre painting. \nMcBride has developed a reputation as a dynamic teacher and mentor. She hosts online classes with the option of joining tightly limited critique groups.  She also teaches at Anne Arundel Community College and selected traveling workshops. She is advancing principles of visual understanding acquired from years of study. \nEarly national recognition by American Artist Magazine helped launch Abigail into gallery representation. Using skills gleaned as one of the founders of the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association and the Paint Annapolis plein air competition she launched Paint the Town\, the first plein air event in Chesapeake City MD. Her work is featured in the 100 Plein Air Painters of the Mid-Atlantic large format book by Gary Pendleton\, Shiffer Press.  She is represented The Station Gallery in Delaware\, Berkley Gallery in Virginia\,  Benfield Gallery and McBride Gallery in Maryland and The Egeli Gallery in Massachusetts. Abigail also shows her work in institutions and museum exhibitions. \nVisit the artist’s website: https://www.abigailmcbride.com/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Abstract Harmonies
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Weavings by Susan Balascio\, Kathleen Remsa and Marcia Weiss. Reception: Friday\, October 13\, 6-8pm.  Exhibit is on display from Sept 26-Oct 20\, 2023. \nAbstract Harmonies is a group exhibition celebrating the creative dialogue between three textile artists: Susan Balascio\, Kathleen Remsa and Marcia Weiss. The artwork incorporates shifting geometries\, ethereal textures and tactile expressions in traditional and non-traditional materials. Inspired and influenced by one another\, we strive to expand the boundaries of conventional weaving in subtle and overt manners.  This is highlighted through entwined layers of complexity\, sculptural layers of tactility and evocative layers of meaning. This new body of work illustrates the creative dialogue—the abstract harmonies—that exist between us.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:California Dreamin' Photographs by Catriona Binder-Macleod
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]An exhibition of phography by Catriona Binder-Macleod on display from January 3 to 27\, 2023. Artist reception will be Friday\, January 13\, 6:00-8:00pm. Admission is FREE and open to all. \nCatriona offers her inspiration for this show: \nI have always yearned to be a Californian\, since I first landed there after driving cross country with a girlfriend in 1977….. a Thelma and Louise kind of scenario….. recklessly driving a convertible Thunderbird down Route 66…. but in our case it was a Pontiac with a canvas bag of camping gear strapped onto our roof.  It was a large canvas bag that flew off our roof in Iowa and recklessly landed on the freeway and narrowly escaped being run over by a truck. \nMy girlfriend realized her dream and got herself a job in San Francisco.  I ended up in Georgia\, a different landscape.  Verdant\, fecund\, and lush\, the thick air filled with a cacophony of sounds throughout the long humid nights.  Kudzu grew rampant over abandoned buildings in a matter of weeks\, live oaks were draped in Spanish Moss and mistletoe hung from the poplars. \nHowever\, I longed for California; the dry crisp air smelling of redwoods and eucalyptus; the thunderous surf crashing in brilliant blues and whites beneath rocky golden cliffs…sea lions and otters playing among the rocks.  I longed to wander in the national parks of Ansel Adams with their towering granite cliffs\, majestic sequoias and spectacular plummeting waterfalls.  So much sky!  Such a big landscape\, such a big world. \nI returned to California annually for many years.  Then life intervened and I got married\, had kids\, a house\, and responsibilities.  My kids grew up and then my daughter inherited my dream.  She got herself a job in California\, then a husband\, and then kids.  So now I am again Californian dreamin’. \nThese images are an homage to that dream; to the blue of the sky and the sea; to the golden summer grasses; to the dry smell of eucalyptus and sequoia; to geraniums and bougainvillea in winter.   These images are an homage to finally livin’ the dream in California.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Into A Paper Garden
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]”Into a Paper Garden” is a dual show featuring the artwork of Linda Majewski and Kelly Martin. The show runs from June 28 to July 22. There will be a artist reception on Friday\, July 8\, 6:00-8:00pm that is free and open to all. \nArtist statement of Kelly Martin\nCurling\, twirling\, squeezing…not usual words you think of when it comes to art making but that’s how @PaperHibiscus creates her one-of-a-kind pieces. The art form\, known as quilling\, centers around the creation of many small coils made by rolling a thin strip of paper around a slotted tool or a needle tool. Once the coils are made the variations are endless. By simply pinching a coil can turn into the petals of a flower\, spikes on a cactus\, or an abstract design. One of the best parts about a decorative medium like quilling is seeing how an adept artist can take it to a new level and challenge the boundaries of what we expect of the medium. .\nKelly Martin\, the face behind the quills\, creates a wide variety of pieces–many live in the floral realm and end up adorning cards or the like\, but delve a little deeper into her portfolio and you’ll find paper bowls\, wall pieces\, and even wearables like statement earrings. One of Martin’s favorite things to do in her slow season\, which is just after the holidays\, is experiment with new ideas and techniques so follow along to see what she comes up with next! \nArtist statement of Linda Majewski\nWith nature as inspiration\, dimensonal paper artist Linda Majewski designs fanciful paper botanials evocative of their real-life counterparts. Using paints\, inks\, and dyes\, she colors a variety of paper types and assembles each piece by hand. Linda specializes in succulents and has ecently added flowers to her paper plant repertoire. She’s always exploring more ways to work with paper.\nLinda exhibits at art fairs and local galleries and teaches art and craft classes throughout the region. She is a current member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen and the First State Craft Guild. Linda is the owner/artist of Paper Greehouse and the owner/teaching artist of Marvelous Makers. She lives with her family in Newark\, Delaware.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:“Cold Comforts”\, Art by Robert Francis James
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Newark Arts Alliance will be showing an exhibit of oil paintings titled “Cold Comforts” by Robert Francis James. The paintings depict a variety of foods using vibrant brush work and simple compositions. In his artist statement\, Mr. James says “The parietal painters at Lascaux could have depicted anything: they chose food. Food has forever consoled us. We are what we eat\, and what we eat often softens life’s edges—momentarily\, at least. \nMoms\, grandmas\, and food makers count on it. I’m lovin’ it\, they hope we’ll say. It’s magically delicious. It melts in your mouth. It’s finger lickin’ good. It’s the real thing. But while food combats emptiness\, it reminds us of la condition humaine: we are creatures of relentless desire\, but our comforts\, at best\, are cold ones. They cannot fill our unending emptiness. Food is frighteningly fugitive.” \nThe show will be on display from February 1-25\, 2022 with a reception on Friday\, February 11\, 6-8pm which is free and open to the public. Masks are required and vaccinations are encouraged.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:The Nature of Things
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Rowena Macleod\, Debbie Hegedus and Caroline Beck are artists\, teachers and lovers of nature. They pay homage to our wondrous\, intricate and threatened natural world in an exhibit at the Newark Arts Alliance. They’ll be showing work in a variety of media including works on paper\, canvas and clay which illumate worlds that are real and imagined. The common theme here is nature\, but how the three artists interpret their “landscapes” is where the transformation happens. The viewer will find solace in the images\, as we usually do in nature – now more than ever as we spend an increasing amount of time indoors on our rectangular devices. We look to nature for common ground in our increasingly polarized society. Nature rarely disappoints us. Show is on display from September 1-25[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
