SUMMARY:Exhibit Visual Messages: Socially Engaged Art
DESCRIPTION:The latest gallery installment at the Newark Arts Alliance ‘Visual Messages: Socially Engaged Art’\, asks us to consider: how do we engage artistically with the world and our community? \nThis thought-provoking exhibit features 45 pieces from 25 different local artists depicting a wide variety of topics including the environment\, homelessness\, politics\, world peace\, and health. Media types range from traditional painting styles and materials to book constructions\, paper assemblages\, collage\, stained glass\, fabric\, and beading with messages. \nThe guest Juror for this exhibition was Vanesa Simon. Vanesa is an entrepreneur\, artist\, and dedicated community organizer. Her personal experience with a cancer diagnosis led her to explore the intersection of the arts and health. In 2017\, she piloted the program “Healing Through the Arts” and later innovated a fiscal partnership with the Delaware Art Museum through her company\, Mariposa Arts. \nAs an artist\, Vanesa’s work has reached an international audience. She has participated in exhibitions across Argentina\, Barcelona\, and New York City as part of an artist collective from Argentina whose focus is Artist’s Books. Her art has also been showcased in local exhibitions in her home state of Delaware. In 2024 she was selected as a Global South Arts & Health Envoy and has had the great honor of being nominated by President Joe Biden to the National Council on the Arts.

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDo you have a body of work that would fill a space and has a consistent theme? The Gallery committee is seeking proposals for the 2025 exhibition schedule.  \nIndividuals or groups of artists may submit a proposal for a show in the main gallery some time in 2025. Groups of artists should have artwork with a similar theme to create a cohesive show.  \nStrong proposals will have a well thought out theme that is consistent for the body of work and not a sampling of many styles and mediums that an artist has created. At least 10 high quality images are also required for the proposal so the committee can get a clear idea of the quality of the work.  \nAn application fee of $15 for NAA members and $25 for non-members is required for submission\, payment mailed in or brought to NAA. If your exhibit is scheduled\, an additional fee of $85 is required by Dec.1.  \nDeadline to submit proposals is October 1\, 2024\, Artists will be notified via email by November 1\, 2024. Tickets are $25 ($20 if you’re an NAA member) – tickets for kids under 5 are free\, and tickets for kids ages 5-12 are $10. Once you’ve purchased your tickets\, you’ll receive a map of the garden locations (the night before the tour) to choose your own adventure!\nTake a stroll through ten unique\, private gardens in the Newark area: soak in the beautiful blooms\, learn about local plants\, and get inspired!  \nThe Newark Arts Alliance is again hosting the Newark Garden Tour\, an annual tour of some of the most lush and enchanting gardens in and around Newark. The gardens on this year’s tour all appeal to the visitor to stay and relax a while\, but all make that appeal in unique ways. Many gardens have water features\, some will host live music\, and others will showcase original art and art-making demos. As always\, gardens will feature different aesthetics and give visitors ideas for what to do in their own gardens\, from using native plants that help pollinators to finding that perfect\, sassy piece of yard art. \nNew Features in 2024\nSeveral new elements make this year’s Garden Tour especially exciting! Steve Ruiz’s Mojo Loco 302 food truck (FB/IG) will be stationed where there are three gardens close together. There will be a small farmer’s market with Trebs Thompson of Whimsical Farms and Christina’s Peter’s of Posy Parlor\, where visitors can buy plants and flowers. One garden will feature pollinator plant giveaways (milkweed and hyssop lovingly raised by Rachel Brewer and Yvonne Settle). There will also be a silent auction of gorgeous hand-painted watering cans\, decorated by local artists\, to benefit the Newark Arts Alliance! Information on all of these offerings will be shared with ticket holders.  \n If you’re interested in garden-hopping by bike\, BikeNewark has plotted out a (slightly abridged) tour for the day. This 5.67 mile route is mostly downhill\, and a great way to enjoy the Garden Tour! A group ride will set out from the parking lot at Fairfield Park just off Cambridge Drive at 9:30am the day of the tour.  \nOne of the biggest changes this year is a spotlight sponsorship from Scenic Outdoors (FB/IG)\, a local landscaping firm. Lisa and Savvas from Scenic Outdoors assisted with identifying 4 of the gardens on this year’s tour. In addition\, they have provided a beautiful barrel of annuals for a raffle that will be run through social media (and in person at the Arts Alliance) on the day of the tour. Artwork will be on display at the Newark Arts Alliance’s new gallery (207 Louviers Drive\, Newark DE) until April 26th. \nThe artist’s reception\, which is open to the public\, will be held on Friday\, April 12th from 6:00-8:00 pm. \nThe juror for this exhibit will be book illustrator and drawing professor\, Alexi Natchev. Originally from Bulgaria\, Alexi has lived in Delaware for the past 30 years\, working as an illustrator and specializing in children’s books for various publishers. He served as the Head of the Illustration Program and a full-time faculty member of the Delaware College of Art & Design in Wilmington\, and since 2019 has been a Professor Emeritus there. It is free and open to all. \nThe Newark Arts Alliance is excited to announce the initial Art Exhibition in our new location at the Shoppes at Louvier’s on Papermill Road in Newark. We will welcome Francine Renee’ Schneider\, a new NAA member and painter from West Chester\, PA to our gallery for a solo art show\, ‘Light Between Time’. \nIt is a collection of Francine’s nocturnal scenic paintings. The exhibit will be on view from February 6 to March 15\, 2024. An artist’s reception\, open to the public\, will be held in the main gallery on Friday\, February 9th\, from 6 to 8 p.m. \nWe were first introduced to Francine’s artwork when she served as Juror for an NAA Exhibit last spring. She has had a long artistic career starting at the Raymond Duncan Gallery in Paris after completing a BFA degree in painting at Syracuse University and post graduate studies at the L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts in France. In New York City she exhibited at the Soho Gallery of Henry Howells. \nBecause of an ongoing medical condition and an early retirement\, after a long career in clinical psychotherapy\, Ms. Schneider returned to visual arts as a focus in her life. She completed a Post Baccalaureate program at the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia\, and was awarded the designation of Alumni Fellow with a studio at PAFA. \nMost recently she has been exhibiting in juried and solo exhibits in Pennsylvania at the Cheltenham Center for the Arts’ 79th Annual Juried Painting Exhibition\, Wayne Arts Center\, Oxford Arts Alliance\, and the Chester County Arts Council. Her artwork is held in private collections in Paris\, New York\, Philadelphia \, Augusta and Atlanta as well as locally. Her oil paintings and charcoal drawings bear witness to a time\, person or passing glimmer of light. Abigail paints landscape\, figure and still life working interchangeably with brush and palette knife. Collectors\, nationally and internationally\, appreciate the color\, mood and elegance of her work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA consummate Cape School colorist\, the draftsmanship in her work is born of an academic interest in the portrait and figure. Her work blends traditional subject matter with modern design sensibilities. She is part of a new breed of perceptual painters working from direct observation be it plein air or in the studio. Though often free of narrative\, her work is grounded in the present day as a contemporary interpretation of genre painting. \nMcBride has developed a reputation as a dynamic teacher and mentor. She hosts online classes with the option of joining tightly limited critique groups.  She also teaches at Anne Arundel Community College and selected traveling workshops. She is advancing principles of visual understanding acquired from years of study. \nEarly national recognition by American Artist Magazine helped launch Abigail into gallery representation. Using skills gleaned as one of the founders of the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association and the Paint Annapolis plein air competition she launched Paint the Town\, the first plein air event in Chesapeake City MD. Her work is featured in the 100 Plein Air Painters of the Mid-Atlantic large format book by Gary Pendleton\, Shiffer Press.  She is represented The Station Gallery in Delaware\, Berkley Gallery in Virginia\,  Benfield Gallery and McBride Gallery in Maryland and The Egeli Gallery in Massachusetts. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Exhibit on display from July 25 to August 25\, 2023 \nArtist Reception and Book Signing for “A Day at the Beach”: Friday\, August 11\, 6:00-8:00pm. There will also be an artist talk at 7:00pm. Reception is free and open to all. \nAn exhibit of artwork from published children’s books illustrated by Alexi Natchev. Alexi Natchev works as a professional artist in the fields of Book Illustration\, Printmaking\, and Drawing for more than forty-five years. \nAfter graduating from The National Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia\, Bulgaria\, he has illustrated more than thirty books for children and adults\, before moving to the US. Since then he has illustrated twenty books with major American publishers and internationally renowned authors\, such as Brian Jacques\, and Jane Yolen. \nHis children’s book illustrations have been exhibited at prestigious museums\, national and international venues such as Bologna Book Fair\, Biennial of Illustration\, Bratislava\, “Premi Catalonia d’il-lustracio”\, Barcelona\, and “Original Art”\, Society of Illustrators\, NYC. In 2013 Alexi Natchev had a retrospective show at Delaware Art Museum. In 2014 he had an illustration solo exhibit at Skirball Museum\, Cincinnati\, of the original block prints from the book The Elijah Door\, published by Holiday House. \nIn 2013 he received Sydney Taylor Book Award\, Honor Book for Young Readers\, and Anne Izard Storytellers’ Choice Award for the artwork of The Elijah Door. \nIn addition to being a practicing artist\, Alexi Natchev is an art educator. Throughout the years he has been teaching at several art schools such as Savannah College of Art and Design\, Maryland Institute College of Art\, and University of the Arts. The rental period is one week starting May 11\, 2024. The property is owned and being offered by Debbie and Dave Hall\, NAA Members. All proceeds benefit the NAA. \nAccommodations: 6 Bedrooms\, 6 1/2 Baths\, Sleeps 14. Value of rental: $6\,212.53 \nMinimum Bid: $1\,500\, silent auction item. Next bid should be $3\,100 or greater as of Oct. 10th. We are accepting bids in $100 increments or greater. We have a bid for $3\,000 as of Oct. 10th. \nTo make a bid before the Anniversary Party on Nov. 11th\, email Pamela Draper with your bid and we will record it. SUMMARY:The Afro-Baroque Journeys\, Paintings by Osvaldo Mesa
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit of oil paintings by Osvaldo Mesa. Exhibit is on display from June 27 to July 21. Reception will be Friday\, July 14\, 6:00-8:00pm. \nOsvaldo Mesa (b. 1960 – Havana\, Cuba) grew up in Miami and started to take painting classes with\ntraditional training at the age of ten with Cuban artists who had studied in Spain. In college he was\nintroduced to Abstract Expressionism and rejected much of his academic background and began to rebel\nagainst painting itself. He would break up the canvas stretchers and tie them together with canvas and finally\nadd paint to its surface. Osvaldo earned a BFA from The University of Miami (1983) and a MFA from\nMICA (1985). He was a full time instructor at CCBC from 1999-2001 and is presently an Associate\nProfessor at CCBC and has been since 1999. Osvaldo has been exhibiting in solo and group shows for\ndecades all over DC and MD\, but has also expanded his reach to FL\, PA\, CT\, and NYC as well.\nOsvaldo’s work was featured in the book Santeria Aesthetics in Contemporary Latin American Art published\nby Smithsonian Press.
